MJHS Music Program
MJHS Music Program
The Martinez Junior High School (MJHS) Music Program provides a comprehensive, sequential music education that serves students from beginning to advanced levels across both band and orchestra disciplines. Under the direction of Mrs. Samantha Flanzbaum, the program delivers high‑quality instruction in woodwinds, brass, percussion, and string instruments, offering students multiple pathways to develop technical proficiency, musical literacy, and ensemble performance skills.
The program includes:
Beginning Band – A welcoming space for students new to instrumental music, focusing on fundamental techniques and ensemble playing.
Beginning Orchestra – Introduces students to orchestral instruments, helping them develop foundational skills in string performance.
Intermediate Orchestra – A more refined ensemble for students with prior experience, emphasizing technique, musicality, and collaboration.
Concert Band – A high-level ensemble that performs at school and community events, showcasing students' dedication and growth.
Wind Ensemble - The audition-only wind ensemble is the most-advance group. Wind ensemble is selective and students must audition to earn their spot in this class.
MJHS is a Title I school, meaning many families cannot afford to rent or purchase instruments. The high-quality music program at MJHS cannot thrive solely on the limited funding provided by the Martinez Unified School District. It is made possible through generous donations to the Bullpup Music Booster fund.
The MJHS PTSA has been an enthusiastic champion of student arts, and their partnership with the Martinez Refinery Company is a perfect example of that commitment in action. Through the generous MRC grant, the PTSA has become an important supporter of the Bullpup Music Booster, helping fund enrichment opportunities that strengthen the entire music program!
